What to Expect When You Reach Out

Trained Counselors

You'll speak with trained, compassionate crisis counselors who are there to listen without judgment. They won't hang up or turn you away. Calls and texts are confidential.

Safe & Confidential

Your conversation is private. Crisis counselors are bound by confidentiality and will only contact emergency services if you are in immediate danger.

Take Your Time

There's no rush. You can take as long as you need to talk through what you're experiencing. The counselor will listen and help you explore your feelings and options.

Next Steps Together

The counselor will work with you to develop a safety plan and connect you with ongoing support resources in your area if needed.

Supporting Someone in Crisis

1

Listen Without Judgment

Let them share their feelings. Don't try to "fix" everything or minimize what they're going through. Sometimes just being heard makes a difference.

2

Ask Directly About Safety

If you're concerned about self-harm or suicide, ask directly: "Are you thinking about hurting yourself?" or "Are you thinking about suicide?" Asking won't put the idea in their head, it shows you care.

3

Encourage Professional Help

Offer to help them reach out to the crisis resources below. You can stay with them while they call, or even make the call together. For immediate danger, don't hesitate to call 911.

4

Stay Connected

Check in regularly. Let them know you care about them and that they're not alone. Remove access to means of self-harm if possible (medications, weapons, etc.).

Recognizing Warning Signs

If you or someone you know shows these signs, reach out for professional support. Early intervention saves lives.
