Who's attending
HiBoop will be at the 10th Annual Recovery Capital Conference, September 22-24 at the BMO Centre in Calgary, Alberta.
Most conferences we attend are about mental health measurement in general. This one is about a specific construct we already carry, which makes it an unusually direct fit.
Recovery capital is a measure we ship, not a theme we borrowed
Recovery capital describes the sum of resources, internal and external, that support sustained recovery from substance use. It is a deliberate widening of the frame: not abstinence alone, not symptom counts alone, but the personal capacities, relationships, community belonging and structural stability that determine whether a recovery holds.
HiBoop carries both of the measures built for it:
- The Assessment of Recovery Capital (ARC), the 50-item measure from Groshkova, Best and White (2013), scored across Personal and Social Recovery Capital.
- The Brief Assessment of Recovery Capital (BARC-10), for when a 50-item form is too much to ask at the frequency you want to ask it.
Both are scored automatically the moment a client submits, and both are charted over time rather than read once. That last part matters more here than almost anywhere else: the ARC has no universal clinical cutoff. Change across domains, and change over time, is the signal. A single total tells you much less than the same total six weeks later.
Why the room matters
Recovery capital is strengths-based by construction, which makes it one of the few widely used measures that surfaces what a person has rather than only what is wrong with them. Our work with the University of Victoria pointed at the same conclusion from the research side: tracking recovery capital, functional impairment and quality of life over time gives clinicians a picture of change, not a point-in-time snapshot.
It also matters for whom the measure is chosen. Deficit-based screeners developed in one context frequently miss social barriers, historical trauma and cultural strengths that are prognostically central in another. The recovery capital measures were built to surface exactly those.
